Last night we watched E.R and normally I have no problem with the american accents...however and don't assume I'm being racist..but in 1 particular scene, there were a group of black guys all talking excitedly simultaneously and I could not, for the life of me, understand 1 feckin word!...It's time the makers and distributors of E.R realised, that the british audience are not going to understand this black american speak..as we would not expect the americans to be fluent in Rab C Nesbitt..thankyou and for the record I'm anything but racist...
Hehe, oh boy well you should see the Americans when a British or espeically Scottish movie comes around. For "Snatch" for example I know not only did they have sub titles for parts of the movie but when Brad Pit launched into his bizarre British accent the sub titles read "????????" not even the guys writing them up understood what he was saying. A sighted friend told me this. So, yeah, southern speak and especially bad black accents are hard to understand.

It's part of our culture though. To simply make black guys talk like regular would be odd and unnatural. do you Britains really take into account what us Americans will understand when yall make shows? E.R. is simply trying to encorperate scenes that would be realistic and appropriate to the show, I think without such scenes it would be fake and boring and I don't think you really lost the gist of the episode from that one part.
I know but man they came across as incoherant uneducated numpties so E.R did little or nothing, to enhance the image of black americans...No the gist was clear enough E.R follows a very obvious formula and after a while, you can almost anticipate the events in each new episode....
it's the same for Jamaican shows in Bermuda on the radio. You can bearly understand them unless you specifically speak the dialect.
